About Tim
Tim Lane is one of Australian sport’s most respected commentators. A chance conversation in 1972 led to an opportunity to commentate a game of Australia football. The following year he got part time work with the ABC calling football. After 18 months he got a break moving into a full-time position with ABC Sport Hobart where he remained until 1979 before moving to Melbourne.
At the end of 1988 he moved from television to radio, regularly calling international cricket. In 2003 Tim left the ABC to join Channel TEN’s AFL commentary team. Tim has commentated all the major sporting events in Australia. He has called over 20 AFL/VFL Grand Finals, 15 seasons of international cricket, six commonwealth games and five Olympics.
Tim also writes a column in Melbourne’s The Age newspaper. Tim’s favourite individual sporting highlight is Cathy Freeman’s 400 metre final at the Sydney Olympics. Articulate, thoughtful in his analysis, and dedicated in his passion for sport, and in particular AFL, Tim is the voice of Australian sport.
