David Boon is one of Australia’s most enduring and admired cricketing figures. Tough, tenacious, and unflinchingly loyal to his team and state, Boon served both Tasmania and Australia with remarkable distinction over a career spanning nearly two decades.

A gritty and dependable top-order batsman, Boon played 107 Test matches between 1984 and 1996, scoring 7,422 Test runs at an average of 43.65, including 21 centuries. His consistency made him Australia’s second-highest Test run scorer at the time of his retirement, and he remains a revered figure in the sport’s history.

He was the heartbeat of Australia’s resurgence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Whether it was anchoring an innings against fearsome pace attacks, fielding bravely at short leg, or turning up game after game when his country needed him most, Boon’s courage and resilience became the standard for Australian grit.

In One Day Internationals, Boon added 5,964 runs from 181 matches, including five centuries, and played in three World Cups, most notably starring in Australia’s 1987 World Cup Final win, where he was named Man of the Match for his brilliant 75 against England.

He featured in four Ashes series victories, delivered match-defining performances—like his unbeaten 184 in the 1988 Bicentenary Test—and hit the winning runs in the memorable 1989 Ashes triumph.

After retiring, Boon continued to shape Australian cricket as a selector, and now serves as one of only a handful of ICC Elite Match Referees, overseeing the game at its highest levels.
