Wayne Pearce had a magnificent Rugby League career between the Balmain Tigers, the New South Wales Blues and the Australian Kangaroos. Between 1980 and 1990, Wayne was a tough but fair athletic footballer who was the face of Rugby League for much of the decade. He was voted the best player of the 1982 Kangaroos tour and was player of the series in the 1984 campaign against Great Britain. In 1985 he was awarded the Rothman’s medal for the best and fairest player in the game.
While plying his trade in rugby league, Wayne studied at the University of New South Wales, attaining a Bachelor of Science. The three years of study in psychology under his belt assisted him when he undertook a coaching career with the Balmain Tigers following his retirement. He would go on to coach the New South Wales Blues in State of Origin, a role he held until moving into the private sector.
Wayne is known as an innovator. He used his scholastic pursuits to influence his coaching methods and developed new preparation methods for teams and individuals. Wayne received the Order of Australia in 1988 for his services to Rugby League and the community.
