About Martin
This self confessed Westie hails from West Auckland and has caught they eye of the BLACKCAPS selectors and fans with his amazing top order batting displays.
He’s had a good rise to the top and says it feels great to be part of the BLACKCAPS. He started playing at age five in New Lynn in Auckland following in the footsteps of his father and brother, but he is the most successful out of the family when it comes to the game.
He’s represented Auckland in the domestic competition and was part of the team to go to the Under 19 World Cup in 2006 to Sri Lanka, New Zealand A in 2008 and is now an opening batsman for the BLACKCAPS. He made his ODI debut on home soil in Auckland against the West Indies, making 122, the second highest score made on debut in an ODI.
Next came his Twenty20 debut against Australia in February 2009 in Sydney and his Test debut against India in Hamilton.
Martin loves being a West Aucklander and is an avid viewer of cult television show Outrageous Fortune. His dad also runs a trucking company. Over the years Martin has learnt how to drive large and small trucks.
His nickname is two toes. He lost three toes on one foot after a nasty accident in his younger years, but it hasn’t stopped Martin from reaching his potential and he believes you can overcome anything if you put your mind to it. Even without the three toes he is still one of, if not the fastest sprinters in the team.
Guppy lives in Auckland with his wife, NZ media personality Laura McGoldrick.
