Sandy Brondello is one of the most accomplished and respected figures in global basketball. A two-time WNBA Championship-winning head coach (2014, 2024) and former Australian Olympian, Sandy brings over three decades of elite basketball experience to every stage she steps on.
Currently serving as Head Coach of the New York Liberty, Sandy made history in 2024 by leading the franchise to its first WNBA Championship—also marking New York City’s first professional basketball title since 1973. Appointed to the role in 2022, she quickly transformed the Liberty into a powerhouse, guiding them to a Commissioner’s Cup victory in 2023 and back-to-back WNBA Finals appearances.
Sandy boasts one of the most impressive coaching résumés in WNBA history, with a 244–164 regular season record and a 39–30 postseason mark, making her the second-winningest coach in league postseason history. Her head coaching career includes previous tenures with the Phoenix Mercury and San Antonio Silver Stars, with 12 playoff appearances in 12 seasons at the helm.
Before coaching, Sandy had an illustrious 17-year professional playing career. A sharp-shooting 5’7″ guard, she played in the WNBA for Detroit, Miami, and Seattle and was selected as a 1999 WNBA All-Star. Internationally, she dominated the German and European leagues with BTV Wuppertal and represented Australia with distinction, becoming a four-time Olympian and two-time silver medalist (2000, 2004). In 2010, she was inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.
Sandy also served as the Head Coach of the Australian Opals, leading them to a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics and recently re-signed through the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
