Aliir Aliir is a professional Australian rules footballer renowned for his resilience and defensive prowess in the AFL. Born on September 5, 1994, in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to South Sudanese parents, Aliir’s early life was marked by adversity. At the age of eight, his family relocated to Australia, settling in Brisbane, where he began his journey in Australian rules football.
Aliir’s passion for football ignited during his school years at Kedron State High School. Invited by a friend, he joined the Aspley Hornets at 14, showcasing natural talent and determination. His impressive performances led to his selection by the Sydney Swans with pick No. 44 in the 2013 AFL Draft, making him the first player of South Sudanese heritage to be drafted into the AFL.
Aliir debuted for the Sydney Swans in 2016, quickly establishing himself as a reliable key defender. Over five seasons, he played 64 games, known for his intercept marking and ability to read the play.
In 2020, Aliir was traded to Port Adelaide, where he continued to excel. His standout 2021 season earned him an All-Australian selection and the Showdown Medal in Round 21. As of Round 8, 2025, he has played 164 AFL games.
Aliir is a proud South Sudanese Australian, deeply connected to his heritage. He and his partner, Sabina Wheatley, have two sons: Mayom, born in August 2022, and a second son welcomed in September 2024.
