Stan Alves is one of the AFL’s most revered figures. His competencies transition between champion sportsman to business development, management and communication. Dedicated to passing knowledge and experiences, whether it in business, education, sport or life, Stan is a natural born leader, communicator and motivator.
Stan played in 276 games for Melbourne and North Melbourne. He won a premiership in 1977 and was runner up in the 1975 Brownlow medal yet Stan is best known as coach of AFL club St Kilda. Taking the reins in 1994, St Kilda had finished 12th of 15 teams the previous year. In addition to poor on field performance, the club had declining membership and financial trouble.
Within five years the club had earned respect from the competition, playing off in two finals series, won an Ansett Cup pre-season trophy and played in its first grand final in 31 years. 13 St Kilda players were selected in State of Origin teams with one player winning successive Brownlow medals.
The club capitalized with increased memberships and a strong financial position. Stan became St Kilda’s longest serving coach and was recognized as the 1997 Coach of the Year and All-Australian coach. In 2008 Stan was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Australian Football as a player, commentator and coach and to the community as a supporter of charitable organizations.
Outside of football, Stan is known for his extensive knowledge of business management, development and marketing. Stan has served as Company director of his own firm, Verified Financial Planning Pty Ltd, overseeing operations of up to 40 consultants and investment advisors. He has also held the senior management position of General Manager Sales and Financial Planning at IOOF Financial Group during a period when IOOF funds under management grew from 500 million to 2 billion. He has also held management roles with ANZ and Mobil Oil.
Stan has also written a book ‘The Sacked Coach’ which highlights that while you may be at the top it doesn’t protect you from internal influences and obstacles.
