About Simon
Simon O’Donnell had a sporting career that reads like a schoolboy’s dream come true. He excelled at sport while studying with Assumption College in Kilmore before moving to Melbourne to play Australian rules football with St Kilda. After two successful seasons, Simon had to decide between focusing on cricket or football. Simon chose cricket and never looked back.
Although his career would be a raging success, after returning to Australia following the 1987 World Cup triumph, Simon was diagnosed with cancer and spent 12 months fighting the disease. Simon not only survived but was subsequently voted the fourth sexiest male on the planet by Cleo readers.
Simon retired from cricket following the 1992/93 season and followed his lifelong passion of horse racing. In 1994 he formed horse purchasing and management consulting company; O’Donnell Thoroughbreds International. The company won its first Group One event in 1997 and has since had many successes. Simon became host of Channel Nine’s racing broadcasts.
A veteran of a wide range of Channel Nine programming, Simon has hosted a regular segment on the Midday Show, been a panelist and host of The Footy Show, hosted The Cricket Show and been a member of the cricket commentary team.
Simon is a well-respected and easy-going person who is widely regarded as a “genuine good bloke”. Simon is an ideal corporate master of ceremonies and guest keynote speaker.
