About Shane

In 1999, Shane left home in Perth, WA to follow in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps and joined the Australian Defence Force. He was based in Darwin for only a short time before finding himself in East Timor on a peacekeeping mission. Upon his return he challenged my soldiering skills through an infantry sniper course. Succeeding in this course left me wanting to test and challenge myself further.

In 2002 he left Darwin for Sydney after successfully passing the arduous and competitive Commando Selection Course (joining the 4th Battalion (Commando) Royal Australian Regiment) – later named the 2nd Commando Regiment, a special forces unit which is part of Special Operations Command. With a focus on land, air and sea capabilities. He quickly became immersed in the pursuit of excellence and a heightened level of attention to detail. These skills, when combined with the highest operational tempo the Australian Defence Force had seen since the Second World War, would see me work in some of the most dangerous countries in the World.

Having grown up as an only-child, Shane suddenly found myself connected to like minded and committed soldiers. It was a brotherhood – all striving for excellence whether in training or on operations worldwide. 2011 was a turning point in his career when he was deployed as a sniper team commander with Charlie Company on Rotation XV to Afghanistan. His company suffered the tragic loss of three key teammates. It was also when one of his team members was critically wounded with a gunshot wound to the neck. This deployment was a critical point in his life – He understood the power of leadership and the tremendous effect that decision making has on himself and his team.

In 2015, after 16 years in the army, Shane transferred his leadership skills to high performance sport in the National Rugby League, when he joined the Cronulla Sharks. His background enabled him to see the industry from a different perspective, allowing him to integrate his leadership skills to build trust within the staff and playing groups. The attributes and behaviours he helped introduced (discipline, belief and honesty) supported the team to winning their maiden premiership in 2016 after 50 years in the competition.

His career highlights are being awarded the Commendation for Distinguished Service medal in 2012 for his leadership actions in Afghanistan and the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks Club Person of the Year in 2016.
