About John
John Buchanan was the highly successful coach of the Australian cricket team during glory years between 1999 and 2007. During this period with him as coach the team achieved a number of records including 16 straight Test match victories, 21 consecutive One Day International wins and two world cup victories, including 24 games undefeated.
When John retired Australia was World Cup Champions, Test Cricket Champions and One Day Champions. His winning record of over 75% makes him the most successful coach in history. Earlier in his career John led Queensland to their first ever Sheffield Shield title in 1994/95. During his five years with Queensland they won the Sheffield Shield twice and the Mercantile Mutual Cup twice.
John has a degree in human movement, a teaching Diploma and a Master of Arts in Sports Administration from Alberta University, Canada. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate by University of Queensland for services to sport. His education heavily influenced his coaching style which was a huge break in previous coaching methods. John was the first coach to use computer analysis for every ball bowled. He also coached each of his players as a ‘whole person’ rather than as just an athlete.
John represented Queensland in cricket in the late 1970s. He has held positions with the Brisbane Commonwealth Games, The Department of Tourism, Sports and Racing (Queensland) and lectured at the University of Canberra.
If Better is Possible is the first book written by John and is popular with athletes, coaches and corporate leaders. In his second book ‘Learning from Legends – Australian Cricket’, John focuses on leadership. Most recently he has released The Future of Cricket which focuses on the Twenty-20 game and where the game may be headed in the future.
