About Damien
Damien Martyn was once paid a tribute by Ricky Ponting who sung praise as “one of the world’s most unsung players in both forms of the game and I don’t think it is really understood how good a player he actually is. He is one of those players who, as the conditions and situations got harder and more difficult, the better he became”.
Born in Darwin, Damien’s family moved to Perth at age three. In 1990 he was selected to the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide. The following year, Martyn made his Western Australian debut in a star-studded lineup. Known for his classy strokeplay, Damien made his Test debut in 1992, at just 21 years of age, against a powerful West Indies team.
Damien spent six years between Tests during which time he dedicated himself to his cricket with Western Australia. He regained his place in a tour of New Zealand and solidified his place in the team during the 2001 Ashes tour of England with his maiden Test century at Edgbaston. Following the retirement of Mark Waugh, he made the number four position his own.
His career-best form came in 2004 when we scored two critical centuries to help Australia take a 3-0 series win against Sri Lanka and was the Man of the Series in the tour of India, recording a run of centuries. His form would continue at home against Pakistan in the 2004/05 season and in New Zealand in 2005. In the 12 month period his 1,608 runs came at an average of 61.84 and included seven centuries. He would be named the ABC’s Test Cricketer of the year and crowned the Test Player of the Year at the Allan Border Medal presentation.
Damien also had a highly successful One-Day International career, playing important roles in the 1999 and 2003 World Cup victories. Damien announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2006. He played a total of 67 Tests with an average of 46.38 and a high score of 165.
Following his retirement, Damien has been a solid media performer with regular appearances on Fox Sports and featuring in the SBS broadcast of the 2009 Ashes series.
Damien is a highly sought after panelist for corporate and sporting dinners and is a perfect choice for guest question and answer sessions.
