Bill Harrigan is perhaps Australia’s finest sporting official. Since his retirement he has been acknowledged as Rugby League’s best ever referee. At the time of print, popular magazine ‘Rugby League Week’ stated the most prominent names in the game were Brad Fittler, Andrew Johns, Gordon Tallis and Bill Harrigan.
Bill Harrigan has seen, first-hand, some of the best ever games in rugby league history. He adjudicated a record number of first grade games, grand finals, state of origin, and Test matches.
Bill grew up in the western suburbs of Sydney and became a police officer. He rose through the ranks to the elite as part of the tactical response group and special weapons and operations squad. Dealing with hardened criminals and life-threatening danger, he has seen the best and worst of human life.
Since hanging up the whistle, Bill spent a year as a consultant with the Sydney Roosters, then a year with the NRL as a referees consultant. Between 2004 and 2008, Bill was the Chief Executive Officer of Australian Oztag and remains the tournament director.
In 2011 Bill was appointed the head coach of NRL refereeing. Bill is a two-time recipient of the ‘Official of the Year’ award, recognised at the Australian Sports Awards. His autobiography, Harrigan, was a best seller.
