About Andrew
Andrew Johns is one of the greatest Rugby League players of the modern era. He sits in the esteemed company of Clive Churchill, Reg Gasnier, Wally Lewis and Johnny Raper in rugby league’s team of the century.
The swashbuckling half-back was forced into retirement in 2007 following a persistent neck injury that threatened permanent disability. He left the game with a record 249 first-grade matches for the Newcastle Knights, 27 appearances for Australia, and 23 for New South Wales in State of Origin.
Hailing from the Hunter Valley, Johns captained Newcastle, New South Wales and Australia. At one stage, he was the NRL’s highest career point-scorer with 2,176. He was a player that crowds paid their money to come and see.
In 1999 and 2002, Johns was awarded with Rugby League World magazine’s Golden Boot award as the best player in the world based on polls of Australian, British and New Zealand press.
For five straight years he was voted the best player in the game in a Rugby League Week magazine survey of 100 players. No other player has won the honour as many times in almost 30 years of the award. Following his retirement, the magazine named him the greatest player of the past 30 years. He also won the Dally M Player of the Year award three times during his career.
Johns has made a smooth transition into the media with contracts with the Nine Network, Triple M, and Ninemsn. He also engages in skills coaching with a number of NRL and Rugby Union clubs.
Johns is also a well-regarded corporate and sporting guest speaker who speaks in a Q and A format on topics of leadership, team-building and mental health.
