Trevor Gillmeister is one of Australian rugby league’s most respected and hard-working forwards, best known for his toughness, leadership, and relentless work ethic. Nicknamed “The Axe” for his uncompromising defensive style, Gillmeister built a reputation as one of the game’s most durable and committed players.

Gillmeister enjoyed a distinguished career in the National Rugby League and its predecessor competitions, playing primarily for the Canberra Raiders and later the North Queensland Cowboys. During the Raiders’ golden era he was a key member of their 1989 premiership-winning side, famous for his tireless tackling and defensive commitment.

At representative level, Gillmeister was a standout performer for Queensland Maroons in the legendary State of Origin arena. Across 22 Origin matches he earned a reputation as one of Queensland’s toughest competitors, playing a crucial role in several memorable series victories. He also represented Australia national rugby league team at international level.

Following his playing career, Gillmeister remained involved in rugby league through coaching, mentoring, and ambassadorial roles. His leadership qualities and team-first mentality have made him a respected voice within the sport.
