Robert Harvey is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of Australian rules football. Recognised in The Australian Game of Football as one of the top 50 players of all time, Harvey’s name is synonymous with endurance, skill, and leadership. This 2008 AFL-commissioned publication, celebrating 150 years of the game, highlighted his place among the sport’s elite.
Harvey was renowned for his elite running ability and precision short passing – considered by many to be among the best in the game’s history. Over a stellar career spanning more than two decades, he played 383 games for St Kilda – a club record – and retired in 2008 as the third most capped player in VFL/AFL history.
A dual Brownlow Medallist (1997, 1998) and four-time St Kilda Best & Fairest, Harvey was an eight-time All-Australian, consistently recognised for his excellence and consistency. He also won three E.J. Whitten Medals for best afield in State of Origin games, the AFLPA MVP in 1997 (now the Leigh Matthews Trophy), and the Michael Tuck Medal in 2004.
Inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2012, Harvey transitioned seamlessly into coaching, where he earned the AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2013.
