About Campbell

Campbell Brown was a Premiership player and All-Australian with Hawthorn known for his fearless attack on the ball. The son of Western Australian hard man Mal Brown, there was little doubting that Campbell would have a distinctively aggressive style of play. Drafted by Hawthorn at the 2001 NAB AFL Draft with selection 32, the former Oakleigh Charger lined up for the Hawks for the first time in Round 11 the following year. He quickly made his name as a ‘tough-as-nails’ defender for the Hawks, becoming a regular fixture in their back half.

In 2007, Brown moved to Centre Half Back where his competitiveness allowed him to compete against forwards with a significant size advantage. Brown excelled in the role and was rewarded with inclusion in the All-Australian team and was a vote from winning the Hawks Best and Fairest. The following year, Brown was instrumental in Hawthorn’s Premiership win over Geelong, which saw him play a role in the forward line in the closing weeks of the season with superb effect.

At the conclusion of the 2010 season, Brown made the move to the Gold Coast Suns, where he was influential in its inaugural season. He captured the essence of the year in his season diary ‘The Rise of The Suns’ (published by Slattery Media Group). In season 2012, Campbell made the move from defence to attack in order to add forward pressure. In doing so booted 22 goals and was a good contributor on a weekly basis.

Off – field Brown is an ambassador for The Shane Warne Foundation, raising funds to help the lives of seriously ill and underprivileged children and teenagers in Australia. In July 2015, Brown undertook the challenge to swim the English Channel to raise funds for The Shane Warne Foundation. The 32km swim, that was 18 months in the making, came to a heart breaking and premature end after wild weather swept in after 6 hours in the water. By the time it was declared too rough to continue, Brown had been swimming for 9 hours where he made barely no ground in the last 3 hours. Brown’s efforts raised more than $100,000 for The Shane Warne Foundation – a truly fantastic achievement.

Brown is also a regular fixture on both radio and television, Brown is at home in front of the microphone his laidback delivery and larrikin character makes him a favourite among footy followers and casual fans alike. He can be most regularly seen on the Seven Network covering the VFL and Horse Racing and most recently on the Nine Network as a panellist on The Verdict.
